beyond nowhere is a three movement piece based on separate but regularly-experienced phenomena: I. Frisson, II. Apricity, and III. Second Wind. Frisson is defined as a sudden strong feeling or emotion. This whimsical movement depicts a balance of anticipation and the excitement of experiencing the unexpected. In nature, Apricity is the warmth of the sun in the winter or on a cold day. In this calm and reflective movement, the listener is lulled through a variety of keys and melodies, both major and minor. This shows that it is somehow possible to experience both cold and warmth at the same time, whether in the moment or through one’s memory. A Second Wind is also known as a “Wake Maintenance Zone”. In this phenomenon, a person temporarily ceases to feel tired and functions at a higher level than before. The exciting conclusion of the piece is full of energetic bursts and driving, upbeat phrases that bring finality in a joyous manner.
Each of these three experiences also point to something that is more profound than a randomly organized universe can offer. Something with purpose, design, and meaning. Something that can’t be fully grasped without a Creator. Somewhere that is beyond nowhere.
